Climbing Mount Meru: An Adventurer’s Dream

Climbing Mount Meru is on the bucket list of many adventure enthusiasts. This challenging ascent offers a unique wilderness experience as you make your way to the summit of the mountain. As you hike the gradually ascending slopes of Mount Meru, you’re treated to magnificent views and diverse vegetation, all while being far removed from the noise and bustle of civilization.

Often overshadowed by its towering neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru has not yet garnered the recognition it truly deserves as a prime tourist destination in northern Tanzania. However, for anyone visiting Arusha, the sight of this dramatic volcano, rising from the lush, forested landscapes, is bound to capture the imagination and ignite the desire for a thrilling challenge.

Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest volcano after Kilimanjaro. Trekking tours to both Meru and Kilimanjaro play a vital role in Arusha's tourism industry, attracting trekkers and adventure seekers from around the world.

Located in Arusha, the tourism capital of Tanzania, Mount Meru stands just 70 kilometers west of Kilimanjaro. As you approach the town, the majestic peak of Meru is one of the first sights to catch your eye. At an impressive height of 4,565 meters (14,977 feet) above sea level, Mount Meru is visible from Kilimanjaro on clear days, making it one of the tallest mountains in Africa. The volcanic cones and craters that shape the landscape today are a reminder of the last minor eruption in 1910, along with previous volcanic activity.

The mountain features two peaks: the Meru Summit, which is the highest point, and a secondary peak inside the crater formed after volcanic eruptions. On clear days, climbers on Mount Meru are rewarded with stunning views of the Great Rift Valley to the west, as well as the volcanic mountains of Kitumbeini and Gelai. To the east, the grandeur of Mount Kilimanjaro with its iconic Kibo peak and the Shira Plateau is clearly visible.

With Sherpa Travels, you can embark on this unforgettable adventure, where each step brings you closer to the beauty and challenge that Mount Meru has to offer.
