Mafia Island's Best Highlights

Mafia Island, part of the Mafia Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, is one of five tranquil, tropical islands that offer an unspoiled retreat. Located just 30-60 minutes by flight from Dar es Salaam, Mafia Island is lesser-known compared to Zanzibar, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful beach holiday.

Upon arriving at Mafia's small airport, you'll immediately sense the slow pace of life. Recently paved roads lead through the sandy lanes of the island’s one-street capital, Kilindoni, eventually giving way to charming farming and fishing villages. Along the coast, you’ll find mangrove forests, stretches of golden beach, and the clear, brilliant turquoise sea. Traditional dhows glide lazily between the islands.

The five islands of the archipelago – Mafia, Jibondo, Juani, Chole, and Bwejuu – are covered in lush vegetation and home to a variety of wildlife. You'll find coconut palms, baobabs, cashews, mangoes, and papayas growing in the interior. The forests are home to bushbabies, wild pigs, blue duikers, genets, vervet monkeys, and Pteropus fruit bats. Along the coast, mangrove forests and tidal flats draw numerous seabirds. However, it's worth noting that due to the tides, seaweed can occasionally wash ashore, meaning the beaches may not be as pristine as other parts of the Indian Ocean, but they still offer a serene escape.
